Mobility of organic compounds in a soft clay-rich rock (Tégulines clay, France)

چکیده

The migration of organic compounds in soils is a major concern several environmental issues. Contaminants display distinct behaviours as regards to their specific affinities towards constituents. retention mechanism hydrophobic by natural matter well known. ionizable mainly related oxides and clay minerals, even if less documented reductive media. In this work, we investigated the soft clay-rich sedimentary rock (Tégulines clay, France). aim was determine relative contributions sorbents on retention, eventual correlations with solutes properties. Both (toluene, benzene, naphthalene) hydrophilic species (adipate, oxalate, ortho-phthalate, benzoate) were investigated, using batch diffusion experiments. neutral aromatic correlates lipophilicity (log POW), confirming that absorption prevails, despite low content (≤0.5%). A quantified Tégulines clay. discrepancies between data acquired crushed solid samples are discussed. Low effective coefficients quantified. These values hint steric electrostatic exclusion, large pore size such “soft” clay-rock. Overall, dataset illustrates general scheme for assessing over wide variety compounds. This approach may be useful predictive modelling fate

Chemical reactions of organic compounds on clay surfaces.

Chemical reactions of organic compounds including pesticides at the interlayer and exterior surfaces of clay minerals and with soil organic matter are reviewed. Representative reactions under moderate conditions possibly occurring in natural soils are described. Attempts have been made to clarify the importance of the chemical nature of molecules, their structures and their functional groups, a...

Clay-shoveler's fracture during indoor rock climbing.

Indoor rock climbing is becoming more popular for people of all ages. Despite the tremendous interest in this competitive sport, participants are made aware of the dangers associated with participating. The authors present the first reported case of a clay-shoveler's fracture at the T1 spinous process during indoor rock climbing. They describe the management and natural history of this fracture...

Organic Synthesis using Clay Catalysts

One of the major current challenges before chemists is to develop synthetic methods that are less polluting, i.e., to design clean or ‘green’ chemical transformations. The chemical manufacturing processes should be such that they do not cause permanent damage to the environment or disturb the ecological balance. Ways to minimize the consumption of energy and raw materials used in synthesis must...

Maya blue: a clay-organic pigment?

Maya Blue, a pigment used by the Mayas in Yucatan, is remarkably stable: the color is not destroyed by hot concentrated mineral acids or by heating to about 250 degrees C. The principal constituent is the colorless mineral attapulgite. It is proposed that the pigment is an adsorption complex of attapulgite and natural indigo; a synthetic equivalent may be prepared from attapulgite and either in...

Mechanical interaction between swelling compacted clay and fractured rock, and the leaching of clay colloids

We consider the interaction between a saturated clay buffer layer and a fractured crystalline rock engineered disturbed zone. Once saturated, the clay extrudes into the available rock fractures, behaving as a compressible nonNewtonian fluid. We discuss the modelling implications of published experiments carried out in Sweden and more recently in Japan. Extrusion is halted either when the advanc...
